Demand Racial Justice in Police Reform

Addressing this nation's history of violent, racist policing requires passing legislation that advances systemic reforms rooted in transparency and accountability. A necessary first step in this process is the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

While this bill is an important start, we must then advocate for the widespread implementation of the National Urban League's 21 Pillars for Redefining Public Safety and Restoring Community Trust on the local and state level. The National Urban League recommends that police departments and localities:

  • Empower communities to re-envision public safety in an equitable and just way.
  • Address the needs of individuals experiencing mental health crisis.
  • Prevent police union contracts from blocking accountability.
  • Create or strengthen independent all-civilian community-based review boards with final authority.
  • Revise Use of Force policies to require de-escalation and deadly force as a last resort.
  • Mandate use of dashboard and body-worn cameras and provide access to footage.
  • Adopt national police accreditation system.
  • Increase diversity and equity in both the leadership and ranks of local, state and Federal law enforcement.

Join the National Urban League in demanding true justice in policing by signing our petition, declaring your support for the 21 Pillars for Redefining Public Safety and Restoring Community Trust.
