Tell the EPA: Cut Methane Pollution to Protect Our Communities and Climate

Oil and gas companies are huge emitters of dangerous methane pollution that is supercharging the climate crisis and jeopardizing the health of our families.

The Biden administration has proposed a new rule that would crack down on this methane pollution, but the fossil fuel industry is already pushing back hard.

Cutting methane pollution is key to slowing the warming that is happening now. From more intense storms to devastating droughts to sea level rise, the impacts of the climate crisis are here. It's time to put the health of our families ahead of profits for the oil and gas companies.

Tell President Biden and the EPA: Quickly finalize the strongest possible methane standards to address the climate crisis and safeguard our public health.

Dear Administrator Regan,

As a member of the League of Conservation Voters, I'm writing in support of the EPA's new proposed rule to reduce methane and other harmful pollutants from new and existing sources in the oil and natural gas industry. I urge you to quickly finalize the strongest protections possible to safeguard the health of our families and the climate.

Recently, the UN's panel on climate change warned the world is running out of time to rein in fossil fuel emissions. Methane pollution, the second largest contributor to the human-caused climate crisis after carbon dioxide, increased by 17 parts per billion in 2021, the largest amount since measurements began nearly 40 years ago. Already, millions of people across the U.S. and around the world are experiencing record heat, and suffering severe health impacts as temperatures continue to rise. Slowing today's unprecedented rate of warming can help avert our most acute climate risks, including wildfires and extreme weather.

Toxic pollutants, such as VOCs, are released alongside methane and can worsen asthma and respiratory disease while toxics like benzene increase the risk of cancer, cause immune system damage and developmental problems. Living near unconventional oil & gas wells has been shown to shorten life spans for residents 65 and older.

The EPA's updated proposal to reduce methane pollution from the oil and gas industry is an important step, reflecting feedback from climate, public health, and environmental justice advocates. In addition to keeping important provisions from the original 2021 rule, like ensuring all wells are regularly and frequently inspected for leaks and that outdated pneumatic equipment is replaced with zero-emitting options, there are key areas where this rule needs to be additionally strengthened. EPA must ensure that:

Operators at wells capture associated gas and limit flaring of that gas in instances in which it is necessary for safety or maintenance reasons; Strengthen the standards to address emissions from storage tanks by making the standards applicable to more tanks; and Provide a clear pathway for participation in the Super Emitter Response Program by ensuring communities and citizens can access data and technologies to help reduce methane and other pollutants in the areas where we live and work.

Without bold action from EPA, methane pollution from the oil and gas industry will continue to skyrocket, accelerating the pace of climate change and threatening public health, especially the health of those living on the frontlines of oil and gas operations. Again, I urge the Biden administration to quickly finalize strong safeguards against methane pollution to combat the climate crisis and ensure a safe and healthy future for all communities.

Sincerely,
