Wolverines Need Protection Now!

The wolverine is in trouble. Fewer than 300 remain in the contiguous United States, including perhaps 50 in Greater Yellowstone. And with their habitat shrinking due to a warming climate and human development, their future is increasingly tenuous.

That's why we're asking you to support the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's recent proposal to list the wolverine as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. Please help give this elusive, fascinating creature hope by signing this petition.

If temperatures continue to warm as expected, the wolverine would lose as much as two-thirds of its habitat by century's end. As temperatures warm at lower elevations elsewhere, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, with its many high mountain ranges, is likely to become a critical refuge for the wolverine and other species vulnerable to a warming climate.

Help us ensure that wolverines have a chance of long-term survival by asking the USFWS to list this extraordinary creature as a threatened species.
Dear Director Ashe,

I strongly support the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listing the wolverine as a threatened species, and specifically ask the USFWS to consider the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) as critical to the continued survival of wolverines.

With around 50 wolverines estimated to be living in Greater Yellowstone, and just 300 remaining in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and north-central Washington, these elusive creatures require Endangered Species Act protections to ensure their long-term survival. I urge you to list the wolverine as threatened due to the adverse effects of climate change and threats of landscape scale connectivity that threaten wolverine habitat.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem offers some of the best wolverine habitat: isolated mountain ranges with elevations above 8,500 feet and deep snow that persists through mid-spring. This ecosystem is the last largest intact source habitat for wolverines that has the ability to serve as climate refugia in the contiguous United States.

Please ensure this animal is on our landscape 100 years from now and list the wolverine under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species.
