Social Responsibility for NC Corporations

Too often, corporations are legally prevented from considering society and the environment in addition to the needs of their shareholders. But Benefit Corporation legislation would make it possible for companies to create structures that are both profitable and socially responsible.

This year the North Carolina Legislature will have the chance to pass a bill that will make North Carolina the 9th state to allow businesses to operate as Benefit Corporations. Under the legislation, benefit corporations would be required to pursue a positive material impact on society and the environment as assessed against a third party standard.

Help show North Carolina that corporations can be both socially friendly and highly profitable. The Senate has already passed the bill; tell the House of Representatives to pass benefit corporation legislation today!
I am writing to urge you to support SB26/HB419, the legislation that would allow businesses to organize as Benefit Corporations. This legislation, which is modeled on laws enacted in 8 other states including New York and California, passed the Senate unanimously. It would encourage companies to pursue a positive material impact on society and the environment. It would also push an increase in corporations' purposefulness, accountability, and transparency with regard to society and the environment.
