As of now, marriage equality is not an official part of the Democratic Party's platform. Two of President Obama's campaign co-chairs, Senator Jeanne Shaheen and former Senator Russ Feingold, have challenged the Democratic Party to support marriage equality, and many others have endorsed it, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
In 2008, the platform when it comes to gay marriage said that they opposed the Defense of Marriage Act, but didn't specifically state a support for gay marriage. Obama is said to be "evolving" on the issue of same-sex marriage.
Please tell the Democratic Party to join these politicians and embrace equality for all families and couples, gay or straight. Everyone deserves the freedom to marry who they love and be treated as equals under the law, especially in a country that prides itself on the mantra "liberty and justice for all".
I am writing to you all today to ask that you all please add marriage equality as an official part of the Democratic Party's platform. It is time, as the more liberal party, to move forward with embracing equality for all gay families and couples as equals under the law.
We all look forward to seeing the Democratic Party support the LGBT community wholeheartedly.
