Khulumani International Lawsuit
Khulumani Support Group calls on the South African Government to withdraw its opposition to the Khulumani International Lawsuit, filed under the Alien Tort Claims Act in New York.
The Khulumani Lawsuit charges 23 international corporations with aiding and abetting the apartheid regime's mlitary and security apparatus through the provision of financing, oil, computer equipment and vehicles.
The plaintiffs are South Africans who were tortured, sexually assaulted, arbitrarily detained for prolonged periods and indiscriminately shot at; family members of South Africans who were assassinated are also represented.
The Minister of Justice, in 2003, submitted a declaration to the court opposing the lawsuit. This was endorsed in 2007 by the present Minister of Justice, Brigitte Mabandla. President Thabo Mbeki supported the Minister's endorsement.
Please support us in putting pressure on the South African government to withdraw its opposition to the lawsuit.
The long term benefit to all citizens of the world could be, if the lawsuit is successful, that corporations will no longer be able with impunity to make profits through exploiting conditions created by repressive regimes. This would be a human rights victory for all people.
We the undersigned, call on the South African Government to officially withdraw its opposition to the Khulumani International Lawsuit in New York.
