Defend the Princeton High School Walkout Students
On March 19th, 2008, 250 students marched out of their school, Princeton High School in New Jersey, to protest the 5th year of the Iraq war. The walk-out culminated in an hour-long rally and speak-out on the school's front lawn, as the Principal and Superintendent looked on in resent.
The sophomore organizers of the walk-out had previously met with Principal Gary Snyder, and explained their wish to be able to peacefully express their views by creating an alternative learning space on the front lawn for the students who choose to walk out. He acknowledged the students' right to choose to do this and assured them that he would do everything possible to make sure no punishment would ensue.
A few days before the appointed date for the Walk-Out to take place, and as more and more press coverage gathered, the principal summoned the student organizers to his office. He sat them down and plowed over their attempts to speak as he ranted about how the students absolutely must cancel the event. He insisted that they do this on their own time and that if "kids walk out for this today, who's to say they won't walk out for tiddely-winks tomorrow!"
After the immensely successful walk-out, where a rare dialogue for learning was created solely by the passion of these students, the administration issued all 250 students a detention of an hour and a half to span for two days.
However, four weeks earlier, the students were required to miss three periods of class while a New Orleans band played and Mardi Gras beads were thrown at them.
What are the priorities of Princeton High School?
Tell the Princeton Board of Education that thousands of lives lost everyday is not comparable to "tiddely-winks" and stand up with the students of Princeton High School who refuse to give up their right to freedom of speech and assembly because of scare tactics employed by the school administration.
