Gainey: We, the fans, express our disappointment at your decisions
- al: A Habs fan
- destinatario: Montreal Canadiens supporters across the globe
Mr Gainey,
We, the undersigned, write to make you aware of our disapproval of your management of our beloved franchise, the Montreal Canadiens. We wish to inform you that it is our wish that if your decisions do not result in success (measured by a deep Cup run) by the end of the 2009-2010 season, it is our hope that you will do the honourable thing and resign.
Our disappointment is based on the following:
* failing to bring a competitive team to Montreal during your self-proclaimed "5-year plan," as this is year 6 of your tenure;
* failing to sign or trade for a big center, knowing that this is exactly what Montreal needs and has needed since you joined the team as GM;
* failing to trade for Vincent Lecavalier, who is not only a big center, but one from Quebec as well;
* failing to resign the heart and soul of the franchise, Saku Koivu, without so much as an acknowledgment of the years of service he gave to our team;
* failing to resign Alex Kovalev, the most dynamic player to wear the Habs uniform since Guy Lafleur, and somehow beliving that the protest outside of the Bell Center was to randomly pay tribute to Kovalev, instead of urging you to sign him;
* letting go of Don Lever and doing so in an unprofessional manner;
* trading for Gomez, whose contract is enormous and will cripple our ability to make other, cost-effective moves for the next five years. You also mortgaged our future, by trading blue-chip prospect Ryan McDonagh in the process;
* assembling a top line that is small, knowing full well that our division and conference has only gotten stronger, with Chara, Pronger, Lucic, etc.
* failing to attract any power forwards to play for Montreal, including Ryan Smyth;
* firing Guy Carbonneau during the season and going .500 yourself and 0-4 behind the bench;
* trading Ribeiro for a defenseman who no longer plays in the NHL; ETC.
Sir, you are entrusted with leading a franchise that many families and children absolutely love. In making decisions, you not only affect a team's roster, but the happiness of countless fans across the world. Your decisions must result in a solid, playoff run, or else you must hand the torch to someone else who can.
