KEEP AN URBAN FARM IN ALBANY, CA
KEEP AN URBAN FARM IN ALBANY, CA. (SIGN TWICE!!)
To:University of California Berkeley (UCB) Facilities and Planning Department, Albany Planning and Zoning Commission, Mayor Marge Atkinson, & Albany, California City Council,
It is the policy of Albany to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020. (Resolution #07-09)
University of California Berkeley and the project developer propose to build a Whole Foods market, parking structure and mixed use housing facility at the already heavily trafficked San Pablo/Marin Ave intersection here in Albany,CA.
This would adversely affect the Gill Tract and surrounding open usable land as well as people's breathing abilities.
In order for the citizens of Albany, California to experience optimal health and well being, we present a petition demanding that the Albany City Council take every necessary step to preserve, protect, and secure the 11-14 acre pristine farm land of the Gill Tract and surrounding tillable earth adjacent to University Village and Codornices Creek.
We will seek every avenue, including a referendum, to keep this century old cultivated treasure from this or any similar proposed development.
A full scale Urban Farm in Albany, Ca. on the location of the Gill Tract, possibly featuring a locally owned organic grocery nearby, will facilitate the future production of food for our local citizens.
In an era of greenhouse gases, diminishing fossil fuels, and wrecked local economies, WE understand essential sustainability as our future, knowledge with common sense as our guide, and the power of the people to take control of their towns destiny and healthy future.
PETITION:
The undersigned oppose any mall type structures, such as the proposed Whole Foods, parking garage and mixed use housing facility, on or near the Gill Tract and surrounding tillable earth adjacent to University Village and Codornices Creek. We are working to develop an organic urban farm community on the last piece of older prime agricultural land in the immediate San Francisco Bay Area.
