Abolish Valentine's Day

Why is there a special day just to enrich the makers of candy (which goes right to our thighs) and greeting cards (think of all the trees being chopped down for cheap poetry)?  Shouldn't those in love be nice to each other on a daily basis?  Why focus on maxing out credit cards for a "romantic" dinner and an overpriced movie?

And what about those of us who get depressed each and every February 14th because we don't have a sweetheart?  We get reminded that we're worthless because we're single.  Well, do we really need to be part of a "we" to be worth something to this world?  It's sadistic to those of us unmated to be reminded of our supposed societal inadequacy.

It's time to abolish Valentine's Day because there should be no special day to be a decent human being to the one you love.  Instead of celebrating love, this day is used by real people to make up for battering loved ones, encouraging a sense of ownership over romantic partners and benefiting industries that perpetuate the stereotype of unrealistic romantic love.

So stop breaking our hearts over one lousy 24-hour period of time every year.  At least with Christmas, there's a chance of being given a cheap gift by someone in your office.  Valentines suck for most people, even if they're part of a "we" because they know that tomorrow will be filled with verbal and physical abuse.

The honeymoon is over for a centuries-old "tradition" that should be put to sleep.  Every day should be a day of celebrating who we truly are, whether we are single or attached.

Abolish Valentine's Day!
We the Undersigned have this to say:

The honeymoon is over for a centuries-old "tradition" that should be put to sleep.  Every day should be a day of celebrating who we truly are, whether we are single or attached.  Why have one day devoted to false sentimentality when the truth is that relationships require hard work and complete empathy and respect for the other person?

Please abolish Valentine's Day!  Thank you for taking this seriously.
