RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE ONTARIO PARKS BOARD

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE ONTARIO PARKS BOARD IN LIGHTENING THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT OF LOGGING IN ALGONQUIN PROVINCIAL PARK
  1. The securing of a comprehensive public review of all logging in Algonquin Provincial Park, (as requested by the Environmental Commissioner).
  2. The implementation of the Parks Board recommendations to reduce the area that is open to logging in Algonquin Provincial Park.
  3. The establishment of a timeline for the elimination of all logging in Algonquin Provincial Park and the removal of associated infrastructure.
  4. The designation of the Algonquin interior as a wilderness zone as logging is phased out.

THEREFORE WE FULLY ENDORSE THE PARKS BOARDS RECOMMENDATIONS TO:

  • Remove 70,772ha from the "managed" forest, that is the forest open to exploitation by logging. This is a reduction of 17% (p8).
  • Reduce the number and impact of logging roads, and the activities associated with them,
  • Improve the important protection for riparian zones, old growth stands and Brook Trout habitats.

I find it completely unacceptable that only 22% of Algonquin Provincial Park (168,310 hectares) is in protected zones while logging is allowed in 78% (594,860 hectares) of the Park.

The Ontario Parks Board, which was appointed by the government, recommended, in 2007, that 54% of Algonquin Provincial Park be protected from logging. As an interim measure, pending a full public consultation process on logging in Algonquin, which should involve all Ontarians, I ask that at least this 54% of Algonquin be protected from logging.

Further, I believe that logging has no place in parks, and that plans should be made to phase all logging out of Algonquin Provincial Park within a reasonable, short, time frame.
