CEDAR CITY, Utah - When investigators discovered four bodies Monday in a Rock Falls apartment, the shockwave spread far beyond the Sauk Valley.
Among the dead were Kilynna Blake, 20, and her 2-year-old son, Dayan Blake, who until recently lived in Cedar City, Utah.
Myrtle Robertson, 72, is the grandmother of Kilynna, whom she calls "Ki."
Ki "was my baby," Robertson said.
"She was just a fun-loving child that had a very bubbling personality."
She also was well-liked by her friends, loved to be social and spent time with her nephews and nieces whenever possible, Robertson said.
"There was never a person that wasn't her friend. If there was, it was because she hadn't met them."
That may not be said for the man suspected of killing the Blakes and two other people sometime last weekend. Kilynna Blake's fiance, Brock Branson, and a friend, Kenneth Ulve, also were found beaten to death.
Nicholas T. Sheley, 28, of Sterling, is the suspect in those deaths, though he has not yet been charged. He has been charged with the beating deaths of a 93-year-old Sterling man and a 65-year-old Galesburg man, and is suspected of killing a Sherwood, Ark. couple in Festus, Mo.
The loss was nearly overwhelming, Robertson said, because Dayan and Ki lived with Robertson in Utah for a short period.
"He was my baby, too," she said. "But he was fun, bright little person, too."
Dayan was a typical little boy, and had a fascination for trucks that emerged whenever one was parked in front of their house.
"If you had four cars sitting out there and he could have his pick, it'd be the truck," Robertson said. "And he was smart, really smart. I couldn't lock him in the house, he'd just reach up and unlock it, and he was barely 2."
Dayan also had a musical ear, and if he wanted to hear music with his grandmother, he had his own way of asking.
"He'd say, 'la, la, la,'" Robertson said. "He just loved to listen to the music."
