Save Marine Parks in Australia!
Scientists and environmentalists agree that more of Australia's rich oceanic shelves need to be put under protection, but government leaders have imposed a five-year moratorium on creating any new marine parks.
Effectively, the government, led by Barry O'Farrell, has put the brakes on oceanic conservation.
And Australia's marine resources never needed protection more. A recent scientific study recommends not only the creation of new marine parks, but a comprehensive system for managing the others. These recommendations would protect biodiversity, fight climate change, and ensure sustainable fish populations for the future.
Tell the Australian government to heed the advice of its scientists, put new marine zones under protection, and agree to a management system that protects resources in already established marine parks.
We the undersigned ask that you carefully consider the recommendations of the recent scientific review that calls for uniting your marine parks under a single law and creating new areas of conservation that would enhance those already in existence. The study was independently conducted and has a broad base of support among liberals, conservatives, scientists, and environmentalists. A five-year moratorium on ocean protections ignores the need to act now to fight climate change and ensure sustainable fisheries.
