No to new Greyhound racing track, Murwillumbah NSW Australia

Tweed Shire Council have released a development proposal for a Greyhound racing facility in Murwillumbah, NSW.  The public only has until 02/02/2011 to make a submission or comments regarding this development application, so time is short!

There are economic, social/ethical and welfare issues surrounding this proposed development.

This petition is designed to inform Council that our community DOES NOT want another Greyhound racing track - that our modern society does not condone the exploitation and destruction of thousand upon thousands of healthy, young dogs every year for a commercial racing and betting industry.   It is time that the government, industry bodies and minority of participants realised that masses of Australians and people around the world believe that greyhound racing is no longer a viable Aussie pastime, that interest and support for it is rapidly declining in our animal welfare-focused society.

Around 20,000 greyhounds are bred in Australia for this "sport" every year  - and aside from the other welfare issues (with how these dogs are kept, trained, injured etc) -  the fact that there is a mass wastage of these beautiful dogs, a breed of one of the most favoured companion animals in the world - is intolerable.  It must stop.

Greyhounds are friendly, good-natured, gentle dogs that make wonderful family pets and companions.

Gambling is a concern in our community.  Despite this, punters have a myriad of sports for betting opportunities. The continued exploitation of animals and subsequent overbreeding and wastage for  human entertainment is unnecessary and unacceptable.

Information and documents concerning the proposed development can be viewed on Tweed Shire Council's website DA tracker.

Please sign this petition and ask your friends, colleagues and family to do the same.

We, the undersigned, object to the proposed Greyhound Racing Facility at Murwillumbah (DA10/0844).

Our concerns focus mainly on the significant welfare issues for Greyhounds due to a poorly regulated commercial racing and betting industry that exploits mass numbers of these animals and generates a mass wastage (of thousands upond thousands of healthy young dogs) every year.  There is a huge focus on animal welfare around the world, with the plight of Greyhounds gaining much attention internationally, nationally and locally, with Greyhound racing facing a global decline.

We understand that there are also economic and social implications, with little or no benefit to the community at large,  and therefore request that the proposed development of a Greyhound track at Murwillumbah be rejected.

We thank you for taking careful consideration of our concerns and objections.
