Support a 911 Good Samaritan Law

About this Petition:

On November 21, 2008, 18 yr old Michael Starks died at Utah State University (USU) after participating in a longstanding fraternity pledge ritual. Michael's life could have been saved if those around him would have told the truth. Instead, as many as five USU students who knew Michael needed medical attention looked the other way so they would not get in trouble and Michael's friends misled authorities out of fear. Michael did not receive the medical attention he needed. Michael's death is a reminder that the safety and well being of our friends and those around us is the responsibility of each one us and should be supported and encouraged by our community. Michael represents countless young lives in the state of Utah who could have been saved if those around them would have felt safe to call for help and not lied or walked away out of fear.

The Desired Outcome of this Petition:

Legislation in the state of Utah that would limit criminal prosecution against a person of any age who, in good faith, seeks medical assistance for someone experiencing a drug or alcohol-related emergency or receives medical attention for a drug or alcohol related emergency.

Rep. Carol Spackman Moss (D) Utah House of Representatives
"We, the undersigned citizens of Utah ask our Utah legislators to enact legislation that would limit criminal prosecution against a person of any age who, in good faith, seeks medical assistance for someone experiencing a drug or alcohol-related emergency or receives medical attention for a drug or alcohol related emergency."
