Save our oceans: Take a stand against shark finning

Shark finning is a violent, inhumane process which involves the removal and retention of shark fins and the discard of its carcass at sea. The shark is most often still alive when it is tossed back into the water. Unable to swim, the shark slowly sinks toward the bottom where it is eaten alive by other fish. Shark specialist estimate that 100 million sharks are killed for their fins annually.
Please sign this petition to urge His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations to ban the practice of shark finning, and to make the importation of shark fins illegal.

We, the undersigned, believe that:
- Shark finning is an inhumane and abhorrent practice that should immediately be banned by all countries, along with the importation of shark fins,
- The rate at which sharks are currently being killed is exploitative and unsustainable,
- Active measures should be put in place to protect the shark population in international waters,
- Long-line fishing (another inhumane practice linked to shark finning that affects many other marine species, including the leatherback turtle) should be made illegal.
We urge you to work towards ensuring that the practices of shark finning and long-line fishing be made illegal, and to ban the import of shark fins around the world.
We thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and for helping us to enact postitive change towards saving this threatened species.
