Tax Deduction For Pets

As you are aware, our pets are family members.  We love them and care for them and provide every aspect of support for them.  Sometimes our pets care for us, need we be reminded of the seeing eye dogs, the therapy dogs and the canine unit of the police department that are there to protect and serve? Look at the rescue dogs in Haiti right now!    For some, they are our lifeline, our eyes as well as our constant companion, their value immeasurable.  Sadly as pet owners we are all too familiar with the expensive yet necessary medical costs to keep our family members alive and healthy for years to come.  For most of us, these expenses are often tough to deal with, even creating  a lasting debt that can take years to pay off.

Therefore, I am proposing the following tax deductions for qualified dogs, cats, horses, birds and other pet exotics as follows:

1.  To include all medical expenses for qualified pets on Scedule A per household,  for those who itemize on their tax returns.  Medical expenses defined as pet insurance premiums, special diets/vitamins prescribed by a licensed veternarian and deemed necessary, medicine and medical supplies for an illness or condition deemed necessary by a licensed veternarian, office visits, routine care, emergency services,  and surgery deemed necessary to enhance, save or prolong life resulting from accidents, birth defects, illness, as well as spaying or neutering costs.

2.  A tax credit of $1000.00 per qualified pet, per household for those using the standard deduction on your tax return, for medical expenses defined as pet insurance premiums, special diets/vitamins prescribed by a licensed veternarian and deemed necessary, medicine and medical supplies for an illness or condition deemed necessary by a licensed veternarian,  office visits, routine care, emergency services, surgery deemed necessary to save, enhance or prolong life resulting from accidents, birth defects, illness as well as spaying and neutering costs.

*a qualified pet includes all licensed and sterilized  dogs, cats, birds, horses, and exotics cared for 100% by an individual(s) or household for 6 months or longer.  Animals whose expenses can be deducted as a  "business expense" is not included in this proposition...only because you can't take the deduction twice.
Each year thousands of Americans deduct medical and dental expenses on their tax returns.  These deductions from taxable income include:  medical and hospital premiums, physical examinations, prescription medications, diagnostic devices, transportation needed for medical care, diagnosis, cure and treatment or prevention of disease and this is great.  This law exists because of the high costs associated with wellness.

However, there are no laws in place for our pets, to  ease some of the expense of the medical costs for our dogs, cats and horses and other domestic pets.  These costs, for the most part is simply out of pocket, and sometimes we have to borrow it and if we can't  address a medical issue we stand to lose a family member.  In some cases, this may be the only family some have! Let's be proactive.   Let's ask our government to recognize the need for relief from the expenses associated with these high costs of owning a pet,  in the form of a tax credit or an itemized deduction!  Don't you think it's about time?

Thank you again, for taking the time to read this. I know this will benefit so many people as well as the animals!

Sincerely,

Crystal B.
