Help Elephants in Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo

Three elephants, Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto have been confined to cramped, inadequate enclosures at the Woodland Park Zoo for decades.

Chai, who was torn away from her mother when she was only a year old, has been repeatedly subjected to invasive and uncomfortable artificial insemination and breeding attempts that risked her health and psychological well-being. Woodland Park Zoo has artificially inseminated Chai 112 times without a birth.

Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants applauds Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter, Michael Berens for uncovering what zoos desperately try to hide from the public: elephants are dying due to zoo captivity. They are suffering from a number of physical and psychological ailments, such as arthritis and abnormal repetitive behavior, that are characteristic of elephants whose complex needs are not being met.

Berens' has shed light on the squalid conditions in which Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto have been kept for decades Urge Seattle and King County officials to demand that Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto be retired immediately to an accredited sanctuary.
