Carrolwood Park & Brittany Springs Demand to Stay at May Watts Elementary School!

On January 26, 2016 our community Carrolwood Park and Brittany Springs received a shocking blow alerting us that area elementary attendance adjustments proposal would take place. There several new areas building developments that are near completion and overcrowding is a concern. Essentially, this entails our children are being asked to leave their beloved school, friends, and educators to be downgraded to an elementary school that is further away with a lower rating. A district 204 meeting will take place on February 16th at 7pm to vote on the proposal move forth on ultimately excluding our community from the school our children know as their own.

The attention our children receive at May Watts is unparalleled to any area school. In fact, many of the children need additional assistance and would be greatly affected by a move. There is no simple comparison the children subjected to move would not get the same level of education, and be subjected to unnecessary emotional issues. The looming potential move has already manifested a huge negative impact on the community kids and our deeply saddened. A better proposal can be made. This should not affect current students and their siblings.

The move seems unjustified as our communities are closer than others that get to stay. Our community was also previously made to move. The move would also have a negative effect on the value of our homes. Many residents chose to live in our area specifically for the school. The community feels we are being singled out because we are of a lower income bracket as well because are a group of townhomes, apartments, and condos. May Watts is a high performing school we are concerned that lower scores may be a strategic indicator for initiating the move. If approved, the elementary school adjustments would begin with the 2016-17 school year. Fifth graders in 2016-17 will have the option to stay at their current school but not their siblings; this literally would separate many siblings and make it nearly impossible for parents to transport.

Our community was also affected by adjustments in 2008; it is someone else’s turn to make adjustments. Please sign, stand with us and tell the school board let’s keep the kids at May Watts. #letustayatmaywatts

The community of Carrolwood Park and Brittany Springs wants IPSD district 204 School Board, to let our kids stay at May Watts. The attendance area adjustment proposal seems unjustified as our community is closer than others. We feel the attendance proposal should not affect current students.Notably, Carrolwood Park and Brittany Springs previously were subjected to moving. Imposing another move on the same community is unjustified and unfair. Unfortunately, we feel that we will not receive the same level of attention and education in another elementary school. The fact is that are currently a group of 103 students and we are not a construction development community. The number of students is statistically impossible to grew as much as the other subdivisions such as Leigh Station. We demand the IPSD 204 Board members to acknowledge our concerns and the effects on the education of the children. We want a new proposal to be made allowing our children to continue their education at May Watts.
