In Only 12 Days, Four Endangered Tigers Died From Human Causes

Tigers are majestic, awe-inspiring - and endangered. The majority of wild tigers live in India, where government officials have undertaken impressive conservation projects to safeguard the remaining population.

But even so, preventable and tragic human-caused deaths still happen. For example: in 12 days right around the beginning of the new year, four tigers were found dead, including two baby cubs. All of them died from unnatural, human-created causes.

There are many dangers that threaten the remaining tiger populations, and most of them are related to human negligence, lack of consideration, or outright cruelty. These include poaching, illegal electric fences, habitat destruction, and human construction projects. In 2025, around 166 tigers died in India.

The most recent tiger deaths all occurred within one particular state in India, Maharashtra. In one case, a female tiger who could have potentially been a mother was electrocuted to death by someone's illegal electric fencing they'd put up. Another young female seemed to have also been shocked to death, but her body appeared to have been carried to a river afterwards and dumped there to rot. And two young cubs died at only around 8 or 9 months old. Authorities suspect a hit-and-run by a car or other vehicle.

India's High Court is taking these deaths very seriously and will hold further hearings on the matter in the spring. It has particularly noted problems with enforcement of conservation laws, and mishandled investigations for dead wildlife.

We must stand with animal lovers in India and the High Court! Sign the petition to demand stronger enforcement of wildlife protection laws!
