Ban People Who Owner Surrender Pets from Future Pet Ownership

Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the United States every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). Pet ownership is an important commitment and responsibility, which is taken to0 lightly by many. Animal shelters should not be a place of "convenience' for people to abandon their pets. From the moment animals are abandoned and end up at the pound, the odds of getting out alive are stacked against them. The majority will have their lives forcefully ended feeling terrified, alone and unloved.
We ask The Humane Society of the United States to step up on this issue and work to instute laws and regulations nationwide to prevent those that abandon animals in shelters out of convenience from being able to have the privilage of pet ownership again unless attebding a responsible pet ownership program..
