Reduce Plastic Bag Wastage

Experts estimate that 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed and discarded annually worldwide—more than a million per minute (West, 2008).In Singapore, 2.5 billion plastic bags are thrown away every year. Singaporeans are wasting finite crude oil and natural gas in every production of plastic bag (Lee and Goh, 2012). As a result, natural resources are indirectly wasted by the production of non-biodegradable plastic bags which take up space when improperly discarded. If we do not minimize plastic bag wastage, Singapore's reputation of being a green city may be tarnished and have to spend more money on the decreasing natural resources for the production of other products.
We chose NTUC because it has the largest supermarket chain (Figure 1) in Singapore thus supplying the biggest amount of plastic bags, wasting plastic bags and as a result, indirectly wasting lots of our finite resources. Therefore, if our strategies are implemented and successful in Bishan Fairprice Finest, other branches may also follow suit thus having a large influence in the supermarket industry. This may significantly reduce the consumption of plastic bags and with that the supply of it and thus preserving our natural resources.
