Please Support SB 63, the Beer Jobs Bill

  • al: Freya Harris

Craft beer is booming across the United States. Although Georgia's beer scene is growing, breweries in Georgia are hampered by archaic laws restricting how they can sell beer. Georgia lags behind the rest of the southeast in this regard, and this is not only hurting Georgia breweries and brewpubs, but also discouraging national brewers from opening facilities in Georgia.

SB 63 will allow breweries to sell pints of beer to the public in an amount not to exceed 72 ounces per person, per day and to sell no more than 144 ounces of packaged beer to-go per person, per day. Furthermore SB 63 will allow brewpubs to sell beer to-go with the same quantity limitations as breweries.

We the undersigned ask that you support SB 63, the Beer Jobs Bill. This bill will boost Georgia's microbreweries and brewpubs by doing away with archaic laws and bringing Georgia on even footing with other Southeastern states. It will also help create jobs by encouraging national brands to open facilities in Georgia, and increase the sales of local beer brands. Georgia has lagged behind the rest of the country for far too long. We need to bring our state's beer laws up to date so Georgia can participate fully in the craft beer boom.

SB 63 passed the House of Representatives this afternoon with a resounding vote of 142 to 9. That support, coupled with the tremendous 51-5 vote that moved us out of the Senate, is a testament to the state-wide desire to work on craft beer issues.
Because the House version of SB 63 is slightly different from the version the Senate passed, the bill will head back to the Senate for a vote to "agree" with the House version.

I submitted the petition to key members of the Georgia legislature today. If it passes the senate, I will send a copy to Governor Deal.
