Demand the government reinstates funding to housing and homelessness programs

Life is always tough for a homeless person but the Australian government has just made it a lot tougher.

The government recently announced $21 million in cuts to housing and homelessness programs.

Funding for several housing advocacy bodies including National Shelter, Homelessness Australia and The Community Housing Federation Australia are among those told that they would stop receiving federal government funding from June 2015.

Less funding means more people, both young and old, will be left to sleep on the streets.

In response, homeless advocacy groups say the government has turned its back on the most vulnerable people across the country.

There are approximately 105,000 people in Australia who are homeless.

Young people in particular will be hit hard by the cuts as children and youth aged up to 17 make up 29% of people receiving support from a homelessness service, but only account for 23% of the population.

Moreover, the main reason for seeking accommodation through homelessness services included domestic violence.

Clearly, the most vulnerable in Australia will suffer even more because of the heartlessness of the Australian federal government.
