Demand the Repeal of Trail Mileage Limits at ORDA Ski Resorts

Currently, state law puts a stranglehold on the trail expansions of the ski resorts of Whiteface and Gore Mountain. This is detrimental to the skiing experience because limiting the number of trails at a ski area means more skiers crowded onto the trails that already exist. Fewer skiable acres may also reduce put off certain skiers from choosing Whiteface or Gore Mountain over a Vermont ski resort. If the mileage limits were repealed, the ORDA ski resorts could expand trails to no limit and would be better equipped to compete with Vermont. More skier visits to New York will improve the economy of the areas surrounding the ski resorts. All skiers need a place to sleep and eat. That means more traffic to local businesses in the area and a better economy.
While some may believe that the trail mileage limits will preserve the Adirondack Park, the combined skiable acreage of Whiteface and Gore is under 1,000 acres while the Adirondack Park is 6.1 million acres. If the combined acreage of both ski resorts expanded to 1,000 acres, it would be just one in every 6,100 acres that was dedicated to skiing.
Signing this petition to repeal the mileage limits will result in skiers having more trails to choose from at Whiteface and Gore Mountain. So that these two ski resorts can continue to expand and prosper, the repeal of their mileage limits will be absolutely essential. Each signature on this petition is one step toward that goal.
