Act NOW to Stop Community Squirrel Shooting Event!

  • al: Chris Wolverton
  • destinatario: Holley, NY Fire Department; Mayor of Holley, NY

Holley, NY is planning to hold their 7th annual "squirrel slam" on Saturday, February 16. The day-long event, a fundraiser for the local fire department, involves stalking and killing red and grey squirrels. Prizes of cash and guns will be awarded to those who bring back the heaviest squirrels. Adults and children 12 years and older, with a hunting license, are allowed to compete in the event.

Though squirrels are pests to local farmers, they can be controlled through non-lethal methods. According to Zelda Penzel, President of People for the End of Animal Cruelty and Exploitation, the Holley Fire Chief will consider not holding the event depending on public feedback. Please sign the petition to convince the Holley Fire Department and Mayor of Holley to cancel the squirrel slam and hold a more peaceful fundraiser instead.

We, the undersigned, are writing in hopes that you'll reconsider the "squirrel slam" fundraiser event planned for Saturday, February 16.

We understand that squirrels are pests to local farmers, and appreciate that the meat and hides of hunted squirrels will not go to waste. Still, we believe it is unkind to stalk and kill these animals for fun, especially when they can be controlled through non-lethal methods. We respectfully urge you to cancel the squirrel slam and plan a more peaceful community fundraiser instead. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
