John Lewis has always had the reputation of being a partnership, a loyal, fair company. Someone who looks after their staff aswell as their customers. Edinburgh has many, many customers who will not be happy with the move to Glasgow, and the possibilities of many jobs going. Especially of friends and family. John Lewis has prided itself on customer relations. Many of the drivers know the customers on a personal level as they deliver to them regularly and this is what the customer wants. To have people they don't know on this level would be an unfortunate move and would see the customer go elsewhere. I, for one, know a lady who purchases everything from John Lewis, from christmas cards to furnishing the whole house. Lots of the workers have been there most of their adult life and John Lewis is in their bones. To make them redundant would be as good as taking their life away. This has been on the cards for years and the solution to the problem would be to build a warehouse mid way. There were talks years ago to build in Livingston which would serve both Edinburgh and Glasgow, this way both the employees would keep their jobs and their homes, and it will ensure the customers loyalty and happiness. Has anyone thought about the customers that live in the east of Scotland? It will be more driving time for the delivery drivers. think of the health and safety issues of these guys having to do more miles. hence, there will be less deliveries in the east side of Scotland due to having to come from Glasgow. The customer will lose out and ultimately, John Lewis will suffer with customers going elsewhere.
