I work for a community center in winnipeg, mb. Located directly beside us is a beautiful splash pad and a play structure. Our community center and the splash pad are not co-owned in any way, but when I get spare time I go over to the park and clean up the trash that is on the ground. It absolutely horrifies me just how many cigarette butts I come across. This sacred area for children is absolutely littered with them. And I do kind of get it. I smoke. But I also have a large green thumb (bad mix, I know). I know cigarette butts are disgusting, and when I smoke somewhere with no ash tray, I strip the smoke at the end, make sure it's completely safe before throwing it in the trash. But I don't expect the average smoker to do this. When they're done each of their smokes and there's no available ash tray, they flick it away with out a second thought. If more parks and public spaces had access to a safe spot to discard cigarette butts people would use them. 30% of the litter on our streets are cigarette butts alone. Thirty percent. Out of everything else out there. This is unacceptable and needs to stop. Help me do something about it, sign the petition.
