aespa (에스파; also stylized as æspa) is a four-member: Karina,Winter,Giselle and Ningning, the girl group under SM Entertainment. They debuted on November 17, 2020 with the digital single "Black Mamba". Their name is a combination of "æ", which means 'Avatar X Experience', and "aspect", which means double-sided. Together it means that you would being able to experience a new world through an avatar of yourself.
On November 17,2020, alongside the announcement of the release of aespa's debut single "Black Mamba". The song reached number one on the K-pop music video charts of China's biggest music-streaming service, QQ Music, for three consecutive weeks.
On January 29, 2021, SM Entertainment announced aespa would release a remake of "Forever", the single originally by Yoo Young-Jin for SM Entertainment's 2000 holiday album Winter Vacation in SMTOWN.com. aespa's version of the song, a "mid-tempo ballad characterized by acoustic guitar sound" with "warm lyrics about promising forever to a loved one.
On May 4, 2021, SM Entertainment announced aespa would release a new single titled "Next Level", describing the song as a dance and hip-hop track with a "groovy" rap, "energetic" bass, and "powerful vocals". It debuted at number nine on the Gaon Digital Chart and peaked at number two, becoming their first top five hit in South Korea. "Next Level" became aespa's third song to chart on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart peaking at number 3."Next level" is also a song that marks the explosion, proving that aespa's new musical style always gives the audience new feelings about music and images. Worldwide, with the trend of ㄷ everyone can easily be done and it has become a craze in 2021. Next has also taken aespa to the next level, bringing home numerous national and international awards: aespa won their first Daesang (Stage of the Year) at the Asia Artist Awards, second Daesang at the 2021 Melon Music Awards for Record of the Year and the like.
On September 14, 2021, SM Entertainment announced aespa will release their first extended play, "Savage". The album contains six tracks, including the lead single of the same. The extended play marked aespa's first and highest entry on the US Billboard 200, peaking at number 20, and debuted atop the Gaon Album Chart. Within 15 days of release, it was reported that the mini-album sold 513,292 copies.
Now, aespa are back with the pre-release single 'Life's Too Short'. The single also marks the group's first-ever English single. aespa performed 'Life's Too Short' during their first-ever live performance in the US at Coachella in April. 'Life's Too Short' is described as a "blissful pop song featuring catchy guitar riffs and bright, hopeful vocals". aespa shared that "'Life's Too Short' contains a message to all our MYs to stay true to yourselves and spread love because life is too short.Through the lyrics, aespa want to invite everyone to live their lives to the fullest, with no regrets, and be themselves, "I'm doing me regardless and I don't care what you say about it / and it don't matter if you like it or not".
