Portland State University: Pledge to Stay Flock-Free
We, the undersigned students, faculty, staff, and community members of Portland State University, call on the administration to publicly commit to the following:
No Flock, no ALPR surveillance - ever.
Portland State University will not contract with, deploy, fund, or renew any agreement with Flock Safety, and will not adopt or share any information with any automated license-plate-reader (ALPR) surveillance system from any vendor, on campus or on university-controlled property, now or in the future.
In writing, and made public.
This commitment will be issued as a signed public statement and/or formal board or senate resolution, posted to an official university webpage, not just a verbal assurance made in a meeting.
Advance notice and community review.
No future contract for surveillance technology of any kind will be signed by Portland State university without advance public notice and an opportunity for review by students, faculty, and staff.
Flock cameras photograph every car that passes and feed them into a nationwide network that immigration enforcement has repeatedly accessed through local police. Our university should not be paying to put our community, including our immigrant, undocumented, and international students, into that system. We're asking Portland State University to make the commitment to stay out of it permanent, binding, and public. A university that surveils its own community isn't protecting it - it is exposing it. Higher education is supposed to protect the people on campus, not put them in ICE's reach.
