Signing a petition gives people an opportunity to express their view on certain issues. It is an effective way for problems to be solved by a group. Dogs in the city are often left alone outside. They are tethered, unable to turn around or leave if they feel they need to. It causes them to become anxious. Sometimes people or children tease them and tethered dogs cannot defend themselves. It is not unheard of to hear of dogs being forgotten, abandoned, while their owners leave them outside.. I care about this issue because abandoned animals are a part of the urban scene. It is sad to see animals neglected and it is often accepted as part of everyday life. Many cities have passed laws for animal protection of this sort and it is not legal to tether an animal for extended period of time. i

Today I was at my neighbourhood grocery store and as I neared the store I heard barking and crying by a dog. Trying to calm the dog, I noticed that the poor animal had been chained to a post in the path of cars and taxi cabs. It was a dangerous situation for the dog and it should be made an offence. Dogs are a part of the family and the community and as no child in chains, no family pet should be left unattended, shackled and chained.

In the neighbourhood where I lived some years ago, There was a small business which kept a dog chained outside alone with only water and a bowl of food. The dog was chained there for days in the pouring rain in a vacant lot. It was obvious that the dog was abandoned. It appeared that the owners were using the dog for a "watchdog". It was cruel and so the police had to be contacted.

My dog Rudy, many years ago, was tethered outside a store nearby and a young boy, nine years or so was teasing the dog with a stick. The dog became nervous and began to cry.
The boy apologized to me saying that he had hit the dog and thought that was the reason that the dog became ill. I will always miss my companion dog Rudy as he passed away a short time after the incident at age 11 years.
