Say NO to cutting staff and students from Flinders University Council

On July 7, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Andrew Parkin sent an email to all Flinders University staff and students commencing consultation over a proposal to change the Flinders University of South Australia Act such that the number of elected staff on University Council would be reduced from 4 to 2 and the number of elected students would be reduced from 3 to 2.

Staff and student voices are a vital part of the conversation about the direction of Flinders University, a conversation that should occur at all levels of the University up to and including University Council. The current composition of the Council includes 4 elected staff and 3 elected students in a total of 21 members, 11 of whom are external to the University. Cutting any of the elected positions will compromise the access of external Council members to the varied experiences and opinions of staff and students, and reduce the ability of staff and students to participate in decision-making, to the detriment of the University.

Claims that such a change will make Flinders University Council "nimble" and "flexible" are highly questionable. On the contrary, it will serve only to reduce discussion and debate at the University's highest decision-making level.

The existing composition of the Council should be maintained.

Dear Professor Parkin,

We, the undersigned, oppose the proposed amendments to the Flinders University of South Australia Act 1966 that would result in a reduction in the number of elected staff and students on Flinders University Council. The existing composition of the Council should be maintained.
