GOP Rep: We'll Clear Rape Kit Backlogs 'Unless They're a Sanctuary City'

At a town hall meeting, U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, a Republican from the state of Georgia, told constituents that he would be unwilling to allow federal funds for untested rape kits to go to sanctuary cities.

When a constituent asked how Georgia can process untested rape kits, he said:

“There are grants available, and we’ll do everything we can to help. Unless they’re a sanctuary city." He laughed.

As of January 2017, the state had a whopping 10,314 untested rape kits.

Victims of rape should not be used as leverage in a political debate over immigration policy. Justice, particularly for victims of sexual assault, should be attainable by everyone, regardless of whether they live in an area that enforces the federal government's immigration orders since one does not have anything to do with the other.

Rep. Carter, we ask you to publicly change your stance on this issue and commit to seeing all rape tests getting tested regardless of where they live.
