New York City recently hosted its first-ever "Parents' Night Out" event, and it was a huge success! For four hours on a Sunday night, kids between the ages of 6 and 13 were able to make friends, have fun, and stay screen-free in a safe environment. All for free! Meanwhile, their parents could do... whatever they wanted!

Parents and kids raved about the event afterwards during follow-up surveys. Not only was the event great for kids and parents, but it also boosted the local economy.

This just shows that governments can and should be working for the people. Sign the petition to demand that mayors in other major US cities, including Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas implement similar programs, monthly!

Having alone time and date-nights is essential for personal and relationship health, but with kids, it's hard to find the opportunity and money to create moments like those. Babysitters and childcare are expensive, meaning that even a "simple" date night can quickly become extremely expensive and seem unattainable.

That's why it's so important to have options like the NYC "Parents' Night Out" program. Held at five different locations (one per borough), the program fed kids snacks and dinner, and also offered them a variety of choices of activities. These included sports, arts and crafts, science and nature projects, and more.

After its first-ever event in mid-August 2026, city staff interviewed and polled children and parents who participated. Around one-quarter of parents enjoyed "me time," while another 18% went out to dinner and 19% had a date night. And 5% said they desperately needed that time just to relax or sleep.

One parent said: "This event was such a gift. As a working mom, alone time and free childcare is so rare, so having a few hours to myself was really special. ... Programming like this gives parents like me a chance to breathe, and that breathing room matters more than people realize." Another echoed this sentiment, saying: "As a parent, I'm endlessly in survival mode; this night created breathing room while providing joyful social enrichment for my daughter at the same time."

This is a beautiful example of how life can be; it doesn't only have to be about survival and enduring. People with families deserve support. Having healthy families helps everyone, including the larger society and economy! Sign the petition to urge other major US cities to set up similar programs!
