You don't have to be a doctor to know that dirty air isn't healthy. Smog,
soot, toxic mercury and carbon dioxide emitted from coal-burning plants
trigger hundreds of thousands of asthma attacks and send thousands of
American to the hospital each year. Yet, each day power plants across the
country emit tons of it.
You can help stop one of the nation's largest polluters, Southern Company.
In 1999, Southern Company, the largest utility holding company in the United States, was the worst polluting utility company in the
nation - emitting more toxic pollution to the air, land, and water than any
other utility. All while making RECORD PROFITS in recent years, and
accumulating nearly $40 billion in assets!
Isn't it time that Southern Company dropped the smokescreen, and cleaned up
its act?
Please, take a moment and sign this petition to Southern Company's CEO, Allen Franklin, urging him to take the lead to clean up Southern Company's dirty power plants.
Dear Mr. Allen Franklin:
I am concerned about the health and environmental impacts caused by pollution emitted by Southern Company's power plants. Because Southern Company relies heavily on old coal-burning power plants, your company is one of the dirtiest power companies in the nation. Southern Company's pollution can trigger asthma attacks, shorten lifespans, contaminate fish, and cause a host of serious environmental problems like acid rain and global warming. Moreover, the Department of Justice has charged your subsidiaries with serious violations of the Clean Air Act.
I urge you to take the following actions to reduce Southern Company's environmental and public health impacts:
1. Settle your lawsuit and correct the Clean Air Act violations alleged by the Department of Justice; and
2. Publicly announce your support for federal legislation to cap all four of your harmful pollutants including nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury, and carbon dioxide.
