We cannot allow America to move backward. As we approach this country's 250th anniversary, it's time we redefine safety.
Over the past year, the people in power in the United States have done everything they can to roll back progress. We've seen attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and reduced support for workforce, housing, education, and county investment programs that disproportionately benefit Black communities and other underserved populations. Programs that help families find jobs, afford housing, access healthcare, and build stable futures are at risk—and we cannot afford to lose the progress generations fought to achieve.
What's at risk is bigger than politics. It's the safety, stability, and future of our communities:
• Economic Safety → jobs, workforce development, entrepreneurship
• Housing Safety → affordable housing, homeownership, stability
• Community Safety → youth programs, reentry, neighborhood investment
• Health Safety → healthcare access and health equity
• Future Safety → protecting civil rights progress for the next generation
The National Urban League is calling on leaders to protect the progress fought for over generations and reject policies and rollbacks that threaten the safety and stability of Black communities and other underserved populations.
If we're going to move forward, we can't do it alone. The National Urban League has 93 affiliates serving 300 communities in 36 states plus the District of Columbia, providing direct services that impact and improve the lives of more than 4 million people nationwide.
