Urge President Obama to Make Nuclear Power Safer
The lives and livelihoods of countless Japanese citizens have been devastated by the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. What happened there can happen in the United States.
Unfortunately, those responsible for nuclear power safety and security in the United States continue to offer rosy assurances that all is well while tolerating serious, long-standing safety shortcomings at the nation's 104 nuclear reactors. From lax oversight and enforcement to dangerous storage conditions of highly radioactive used nuclear fuel, to wholly inadequate emergency planning -- it's a recipe for disaster.
While it is impossible to eliminate all of the risks associated with nuclear power, with proper and aggressive oversight, we can make nuclear power safer.
Tell President Obama to improve nuclear safety and protect the public today!
Dear President Obama,
Mr. President, there are steps you can take to make U.S. nuclear power safer.

The nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan could happen here in the United States. Yet, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is not doing a good enough job protecting Americans from the dangers of nuclear power. In fact, far from it -- the NRC has long tolerated or ignored serious shortcomings in plant safety and security.
That's a recipe for disaster.
The NRC should:
- Reduce the risks associated with used, radioactive nuclear fuel by requiring reactor owners to store more of us in dry casks.
- Revamp outdated emergency plans at nuclear power plants.
- Consistently and aggressively enforce its existing safety regulations.
Please demand that the NRC take its responsibility more seriously and nominate commissioners who are committed to making nuclear power safer and more secure.
