President Obama - Sea Turtles Need Our Help

Sea turtles have been swimming the oceans for millions and millions of years. They have seen dinosaurs come and go, and the rise and fall of civilizations. But without our help, these ancient creatures may not have much longer on this earth.

In our modern world, destructive trawls and plastic pollution threaten sea turtles. Beach erosion and coastal development plague them on land. With six of the world's seven sea turtle species swimming in US waters, we need to be an example to the rest of the world on how to best protect these amazing creatures.

We can do a lot better than we're doing now. Please sign this petition telling President Obama that you want comprehensive sea turtle protections.

Dear President Obama,

Sea turtles have been swimming the world’s oceans for more than 100 million years. These majestic creatures even survived the mass dinosaur extinction. Sea turtles are important ecologically, economically and culturally, here in the United States and worldwide.

Despite these iconic animals having survived through millions of years, they are now imperiled by several threats -- destructive fishing practices, habitat destruction and climate change, just to name a few.
Sea turtles desperately need our help. The United States government should be a leader in sea turtle protection and conservation. Our state of knowledge about the status of many sea turtle populations is limited. Additionally, the federal government does not even track the total number of turtles that it authorizes to be harmed or killed each year. Sea turtles need comprehensive protections based on science, including in water and on land habitat protections, and a real limit on the number of turtles that are being harmed or killed each year.

Please protect our sea turtles and oceans – they are depending on you.
