Mastercard accused of overcharging UK shoppers

The UK's biggest-ever consumer claim argued that Mastercard's fees between 1992 and 2008 were unlawful and led to higher prices in shops and supermarkets. If you bought goods or services from a retailer that accepted Mastercard between 1992 and 2010, you could be entitled to £45 to £70 – even if you never had a Mastercard.

The class action, led by former Financial Ombudsman Walter Merricks, claimed Mastercard charged retailers unlawful fees that were passed on to consumers through higher prices. These hidden costs were said to have affected almost every UK adult – whether you paid by cash, cheque, debit or credit card.

Claims are expected to open in the coming months, with payments in the first half of 2027.
