Strengthen the Climate and Energy Bill

With greenhouse gas levels and global temperatures rising each day, the time is now for new energy legislation. The senate is considering the American Power Act, a bill which aims to cut emissions of greenhouse gases by 17 percent by 2020 and by more than 80 percent by 2050. This bill is a good starting point for fighting global warming, ending our dependence on foreign oil, and creating new green-energy jobs.
However, this is a bill that needs to be strengthened, not watered-down. Senators are under pressure to pass less effective versions of this bill -- some that might even remove the limit on greenhouse gas emissions. Not only should this aspect of the bill be preserved, but the bill should be strengthened to end our reliance on offshore oil. In light of the recent BP oil spill disaster, we ask Congress not to allow this bill or any other legislation to safe-harbor offshore drilling.
We cannot continue to follow an energy plan that relies on offshore oil and leads to environmental disasters, in the forms of oil spills and ongoing climate change. Urge the Senate to pass strong, comprehensive legislation addressing clean energy and climate protection.
Dear [Decision Maker],
In light of the recent BP oil spill disaster, I'm writing to urge you to pass strong clean energy and climate protection legislation. The American Power Act is a good starting point for fighting global warming, ending our dependence on foreign oil and creating new green-energy jobs; however, it should be strengthened to end our reliance on offshore oil.

I also want to express my concern over any efforts to water-down the legislation. The limits on greenhouse gas emissions are essential and in order to avoid cataclysmic climate change we must reduce emissions by 17 percent by 2020 and by more than 80 percent by 2050.
The BP oil disaster was a wake-up call. We need a new energy plan based on clean energy and environmental protection. Please take advantage of this opportunity to pass strong, comprehensive legislation addressing clean energy and climate protection.
