Meet Memunatu, a 10-year-old girl from Sierra Leone.
Between 2014 and 2016 Sierra Leone was in the grip of an Ebola epidemic. Nearly 4,000 people lost their lives and a national state of emergency was declared. All of the schools were shut in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.
Most children, like Memunatu, missed a whole school year – stuck at home, unable to go outside and play because they were in constant fear of the disease and mourning for family and friends who had died.
As Sierra Leone now begins to recover, urgent action is needed more than ever, for relevant and up-to-date books which can help children reach their full potential.
This is a crucial time for education in Sierra Leone as most schools lack books and resources and don’t even have a school library.
Memunatu and her classmates have already lost a year of their education. And so long as they're stuck without books, or learning from old books with out-of-date information, they risk continuing to fall behind and see their futures diminished.
