Urge Your Members of Congress to Support 100% Clean Electricity by 2035

For the first time in more than a decade, our country has a shot at passing energy and climate reforms that will shape this century and for generations to come.

This. Is. It.

But, seizing this moment depends on ALL members of Congress hearing from ALL of us.

We're building the list of supporters and engaged citizens from across the South who we can count on to speak up and make sure Congress is hearing from voters during this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Southeast is home to some of the biggest utility systems in the nation. But not a single one of these utilities is on track to be carbon-free by 2035, or even 2050.

A national Clean Electricity Standard (CES) would change that trajectory and direct the nation's power sector to be carbon-free by 2035.

To avert the worst impacts of climate change, we must slash greenhouse gas emissions and rapidly decarbonize our energy sector. A federal CES will help us get to a 100% carbon-free electric grid by 2035 and serve as the cornerstone of our broader clean energy transformation that could create millions of well-paying jobs, improve public health, and save households hundreds of dollars per year in lower costs, while also righting historical injustices and lifting up the frontline communities most impacted by the climate crisis.

The Southeast is poised to lead the clean energy transformation, and a federal CES can be the catalyst to accelerate our progress — but we need to show ALL members of Congress just how many of us want to see them get it done.

Add your name to make sure your members of Congress know you are among the ranks of regular voters and engaged citizens in the South supporting a 100% Clean Electricity Standard!
Dear Representative,

To avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we must slash greenhouse gas emissions and rapidly decarbonize our energy sector. A Clean Electricity Standard (CES) will help us get to a 100% carbon-free electric grid by 2035 and serve as the cornerstone of our broader clean energy transformation that could create millions of well-paying jobs, improve public health, and reduce bills

The Southeast is home to some of the biggest utility systems in the nation: Duke Energy, Southern Company, NextEra, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Not a single one of these utilities is on track to be carbon-free by 2035--or even 2050--or bring about the resulting economic and health benefits to Southeastern residents. A CES can change that.

Dozens of states, including North Carolina, already have renewable or clean energy standards, and approximately one-third of all Americans live in cities with 100% renewable or clean energy targets. Today I am urging you to support a 100% Clean Electricity Standard to rapidly decarbonize our electricity sector and secure all of the related benefits. The Southeast is home to many frontline communities that are burdened by the impacts of climate change and fossil fuel pollution. With proper direction, the sector transformation achieved through a Clean Electricity Standard can lift up those communities and right historical injustices. In the absence of strong action, the coastal impacts of climate change, particularly sea level rise, flooding, and stronger hurricanes, are likely to continue to harm communities and infrastructure in the Southeast. Emission reductions from electricity generation and transportation are key tools to combat these impacts.

I believe the Southeast can be a leader in the race to zero-emissions electricity. We have, right here in our region, the nation's largest public power provider, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which is owned by the federal government, and is meant to serve as a living laboratory for this necessary clean energy transformation. Our region also has significant amounts of installed solar capacity (and the potential for far more) as well as thousands of miles of coastline with massive offshore wind potential.

The Southeast also stands to benefit immensely from a rapid increase in clean energy. Our region is already home to a robust manufacturing supply chain. A national Clean Electricity Standard would further open up markets and create more jobs here in our region, positioning the Southeast to lead in the clean energy transformation. I urge you to support this critical policy.
