Urge Congress to Take Action for Refugee and Migrant Children and Families

Every child, regardless of borders, needs safety and protection. UNICEF has advocated for children's rights for over 70 years and knows that children need to be seen as children, first and foremost.

Central American families aren't migrating they are fleeing from gang violence, domestic violence, poverty, lack of education and devastating hurricanes. The real child crisis is not at the U.S. border; it's in the poorest communities of northern Central America and Mexico.

These risks have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with UNICEF recently reporting drastic increases in the number of refugee and migrant children and families in Mexico during the first three months of 2021. Half of the children were traveling without their parents.

Now more than ever, the United States has a responsibility to save lives and preserve the dignity of refugee and migrant children and families by directly addressing the complex factors causing them to embark on these dangerous journeys. Executive Director Henrietta Fore said, "UNICEF believes we have a unique moment to co-ordinate our efforts, and boost investments in schools, training, social safety nets and local social workers. These are all proven game-changers that can reduce violence, and deliver the skills, opportunity and hope young people need to build better futures for themselves and their communities and countries."

Both Congress and the Biden Administration are talking about significant investments in development and humanitarian programs for Northern Central America to address these longstanding and worsening challenges. We need them to act on these investments NOW. Join us in our commitment to protect children's lives and rights, especially the most vulnerable children on the move, by urging Congress to move quickly on robustly funding efforts to safeguard children and families in Central America.

Dear [Legislator Title] [Legislator Last Name],

Central American families aren't migrating — they are fleeing from gang violence, domestic violence, poverty, lack of education and devastating hurricanes.

This is a unique moment to boost investments in schools, training, social safety nets and local social workers. These are all proven game-changers that can reduce violence, and deliver the skills, opportunity and hope young people need to build better futures for themselves — and their communities and countries.

I urge you, as my Member of Congress, to quickly pass funding legislation that provides significant investments in development and humanitarian programs for Central America, centered on children and families. These investments will help create better living conditions and opportunities free of violence for families and children.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
