Protect Public Lands from Anti-Government Extremists

Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy made headlines when he willfully broke the law by grazing his cows on federally-owned land without paying the necessary fees. Bundy said he doesn't acknowledge the existence of the U.S. government and was supported by a gang of armed "sovereign citizens" prepared to battle federal lands officials militia-style.

A new Nevada bill would give anti-government extremists like Bundy a dangerous amount of legitimacy and lay the foundation for Congress to hand over public lands to the states. The bill says local sheriffs should act as the primary law enforcement in unincorporated areas of counties and gives them the authority to enforce use violations on federal land — a job that belongs to federal officials.

The original version of this bill was called unconstitutional by the Nevada legislature's lawyers. This rewritten version is still appallingly dangerous! Demand Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval veto AB 408.
Dear Governor Sandoval,

AB 408 enables local sheriffs to act as primary law enforcement in unincorporated areas of Nevada counties. It legitimizes the movement of anti-government extremists, "sovereign citizens" who don't recognize federal ownership of public lands.

I urge you to keep authority over public lands in the hands of the federal government and veto AB 408.

Victory! Late Tuesday night, Nevada lawmakers rejected the bill that tried to put local sheriffs in charge of federal land. Passage would have paved the way for a state and private takeover of public lands, legitimizing "sovereign citizen" Cliven Bundy's extremist movement. Unfortunately, in Congress, the lands takeover threat remains. If you haven’t already, please urge Congress to protect federal lands for all of us.
