Right now, thousands of women and girls are fleeing war and persecution. But even after escaping a war zone, their battle for safety is ongoing. Women seeking refuge are at great risk of violence, sexual exploitation and even death.
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has reported that refugee women are being raped in detention centres and forced into prostitution. 26% of women migrating through East Africa reported experiencing sexual assault or harassment.
This is an outrage.
Refugee women have an urgent need for protection. Access to services such as gender-based violence shelters, where women can receive specialised assistance, is desperately needed.
This is a serious issue which not many people realise is happening now, and we must do something about it.
