Mobilise the NSW Agricultural Minister to Help Hens by Banning Battery Cages

Every year, 11 million hens are trapped in battery cages in Australia. Their bodies are exploited for 16 months to produce eggs before they are considered "spent" by the industry and killed. Instead of enjoying a long, happy life, these hens endure endless cruelty for the duration of their short lives.

The conditions these hens are forced to live in are unacceptable, and as a result they develop countless physical and behavioral problems. Typically, about three to eight hens are crammed into a single cage — this means hens cannot flap their wings or perch, and are more likely to face aggression and cannibalism from other hens inside their shared cage.

But hope is on the horizon. Agricultural Ministers across Australia will gather next year to consider an update to the outdated standards and guidelines for Poultry, including a potential phase-out of cruel battery cages.

That's why World Animal Protection is calling on the NSW Agricultural Minister, Adam Marshall, to help ban battery cages by supporting the proposed 10-year plan to phase out battery cages in Australia.

Ideally, we would like to see all hens out of cages immediately. However, farmers will need a chance to transition out of using conventional battery cages. This will involve a level of planning and investment — 10 years will allow enough time to make this transition.

Sign the petition today to send an email to NSW Agricultural Minister Adam Marshall calling on him to help ban battery cages by supporting a phase out when the Agricultural Ministers meet again next year.
