Dear FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan
I'm writing to urge you to ensure that the FDA will base its upcoming
decision about whether to make emergency contraceptive pills available
over-the-counter on science, not politics.
Studies have shown that this product is extremely safe and easy to use.
Women do not need a health care professional to tell them when they need
it. And because emergency contraception is more effective when used
sooner, the delay caused by the need to get and fill a prescription,
actually diminishes the product's effectiveness.
Emergency contraceptive pills help women to avoid unintended pregnancy.
The FDA has the opportunity to expand women's timely access to emergency
contraception by making a science-based decision to switch it to
over-the-counter status.
Signed,
The Undersigned
