School districts across Washington state are closing schools, cutting staff positions, and canceling classes. (Source: "School closures, cuts to clubs and music possible as WA schools face 'cliff'" Seattle Times 4/21/2023)
Our schools are teetering on the edge of a dangerous cliff because Washington's funding system doesn't meet the needs of students. Over and over again we make school districts choose between school closures or raising regressive property taxes that fall hardest on low and middle income families.
Did you know that mega-millionaires and billionaires in Washington pay the lowest share of state and local taxes? They've rigged our state's tax code so they get away with contributing the least, making the rest of us pay more for critical services like education.
It doesn't have to be this way. We came together from across the state to pass a modest capital gains tax on the super rich to fund more childcare openings.
Now we demand lawmakers in Olympia make sure mega-millionaires and billionaires pay what they owe to fully fund our schools from Bellingham to Walla Walla. If the wealthiest pay their share, all Washington students can succeed. Add your name now!
To Washington State's Lawmakers:
We demand you take action to stop school closures and other drastic cuts to students' education. From Bellingham to Walla Walla, students are relying on you to provide them with the best possible education opportunities.
No more forcing school districts to choose between cuts and raising property taxes, putting more pressure on low income and middle class families. It's time to make Washington's mega-millionaires and billionaires pay back what they owe our state.
You did the right thing when you passed a capital gains tax on the stock market profits of the top 0.2% of Washingtonians. Now it's time to take the next step.
Pass taxes on the super-rich so we can fully fund school districts, stop school closures, and make sure our students have access to the education they need to succeed.
