Change Gill net rules in North Carolina

  1. Unattended gill nets are a wasteful fishing method and should be attended all times to stop wasteful killing of non-targeted fish, bird and turtle species.
  2. Mandatory attendance would stop the waste due to the person fishing the net being right there and able to release the fish before it dies.
  3. We support commercial fishermen and their desire to make a living from the water and also support fishing methods that are unwasteful.

We the undersigned wish to address Gill Net rules in the coastal waters of North Carolina.  There is too much waste associated with untended gill nets.  We desire to do away with waste.  Short of actually ridding our waters of gill nets entirely, the best way to do this to have the nets tended 24 hours a day.  This will keep the shallow water nets from having a school of fish swim into it  and be wasted and unusable by the time the owner of the net returns, which happens every day.  We would also like it to be made a violation for nets to be set in such a way as to be a violation to be left on dry land when the tide recedes.  We do not wish for commercial fisherman to be out of business, merely for less wasteful practices to be used and for wasteful gill netting to be made less so.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
