Food is our Future, Keep Ireland GM free

  • par: www.afri.ie
  • destinataire: Irish Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
When the greens and fianna fail agreed a program for government they stated that Ireland would remain free of Genetically Modified crops and food for human consumption. Outgoing Minister Brendan Smith took it upon himself to tell Europe that Ireland were changing this policy and would turn pro-gmo!!

Following intense lobbying by the USA and the agri-biotech / animal feed cartels Ireland's Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Brendan Smith has changed Irish Policy on GM products being allowed onto the market without Irish citizens consent.

This policy decision means that the sale of some Genetically Modified products will be tolerated in Ireland.  The minister passed a bill in which Ireland "altered its voting position"and will back proposals from the EU Commission "aimed at authorising the placing on the market of food, food ingredients and feed containing, consisting of, or produced from genetically modified maize and cotton."

This decision was made without consent or consultation from Irish food producers and consumers.

Please sign this petition to voice your disconsent with this policy change.

We the undersigned reject your recent decision to change Irish policy on the import of Genetically Modified food products into Ireland. We believe that as farmers, consumers, food producers and citizens you are putting our future livelihoods and the future of our children at risk.

We would like to keep Ireland GM free for the benefit of Irish people today and into the future. Food is our Future.

Fianna Fail's deregulation of the banking and property development sectors has already ruined our country. Their last-ditch attempt to deregulate of our food safety policy not only threatens our health and our environment, but also puts the nail in the coffin of Ireland's reputation as a quality food producer.

European consumers do NOT want to eat GM food, including meat, poultry, fish and dairy produce from livestock fed on GM animal feed. It's time for the Government to stop pandering to the pesticide / agri-biotech / animal feed cartel, to stop disseminating their disinformation, and to protect Ireland's food and farming future.

Please ban field trials and cultivation of GM crops, and introduce a voluntary GM-free label to enable Irish farmers and food processors to compete in the EU quality food market.
